Sri Lanka has long been recognized as one of the world’s most important gemstone sources, and within this island, the Ratnapura region stands as the heart of natural sapphire discovery. This story begins in that gem-rich land—where rivers, soil, and generations of experience quietly shape stones that later become heirlooms.

The journey started in the Ratnapura District of Sri Lanka, specifically near Kuruwita village, an area respected for producing fine-quality natural sapphires. Here, a 3.13 carat unheated white sapphire rough was discovered through traditional mining methods. The stone immediately stood out for its purity and bright white appearance—clear, lively, and carrying a diamond-like presence even in its rough form.

Rather than rushing the process, the stone was carefully studied. Its crystal structure, natural shape, and clean internal areas showed strong potential for a refined cut with excellent light return. Respect for the material was essential. A decision was made to transform this rough into a faceted gemstone that would emphasize brilliance without sacrificing authenticity.

The cutting process was entrusted to Mr. Janaka, an experienced Sri Lankan gem cutter known for precision and restraint. After careful planning, the stone was cut into a beautifully proportioned 1.53 carat octagon shape with a scissors-cut pavilion. This cutting style was chosen specifically to enhance luster, balance, and internal reflection—allowing the natural white sapphire to display a clean, elegant sparkle.

Alongside this stone was another exceptional sapphire already in the collection: a 1.35 carat dark blue “Kaka Neelam”, an unheated natural sapphire prized for its deep color and strength. Kaka Neelam is especially respected among collectors and astrological buyers for its intensity, clarity, and stability—qualities traditionally associated with high-grade blue sapphires.

Once cutting was complete, both gemstones were submitted for professional gemological verification. Certification was carried out by the Colored Stone Laboratory (CSL). The results confirmed what experience had already shown—both stones were natural corundum, unheated, and of excellent quality.

With the certified stones ready, the next step was jewelry creation. The customer requested a custom design that would highlight contrast—light and dark, clarity and depth—while remaining timeless. After discussions between the client, gem specialists, and the jeweler, a final design concept was agreed upon.

The ring was crafted in 22-karat fine yellow gold by Mr. Samantha, a skilled jeweler known for clean finishing and strong structural work. The white sapphire and dark blue Kaka Neelam were set in harmony, each stone enhancing the presence of the other. The result was a balanced, elegant ring—rooted in natural origin, shaped by human skill, and completed with intention.
